Friends of the Williston Public Library
FALL - 2005 Friends
of the Williston Public Library starts its tenth year and
September was an eventful month. We started the year with a very successful
book sale the First Saturday and donated the proceeds to the American Red Cross
for hurricane relief. Ruth Parker, our enterprising treasurer, was able to
double the amount by giving to the Red Cross through the matching fund program
at Compass Bank in Then, attorney Luther Beauchamp, Chiefland, brought us humor and memories in a talk at the library, September 20. We had a large and enthusiastic group to hear him and he said he enjoyed being with us. ETIQUETTE:
At Michelle’s suggestion “Friends” is sponsoring a course in manners and social
skills. Robin Steele, ANTIQUES
AND SIKORSKI – Dust off your antiques (but don’t harm them with heavy cleaners)
and bring them to the library October 17 at CHRISTMAS
BASKETS AUCTION – Dorothy Walker and Amber Rossi have saved our Christmas
Holiday by agreeing to head up the Christmas Baskets Auction. When you receive
your letter to donate, please be generous. The baskets are always so pretty,
and it is a major fund-raiser for “Friends”. More than that, it has become part
of the Christmas celebration in Williston and the library is always decorated
“to the nines”, thanks to Michelle Traylor who loves to decorate! The baskets
usually go on display in early November and the auction is in the middle of
December at the Library Christmas Open House. “FRIENDS”
WEBSITE is about to appear on your monitor with information you can access as
fast as your computer will join the Internet. Peter Zettler has worked with a
computer programmer whiz and it is almost ready to go. This newsletter will be
on it. It has been said that former Willistonites as far away as Hong Kong and
Zimbabwe will be hanging onto cyber space for our every action, that they will
want to know what we are doing, will join “Friends,” and we will be trying to
figure out international monies before we know it! Oh yeah, sure – but
seriously, it will be a step toward broadening our scope. The website address is:
www.friendsofwillistonpubliclibrary.org.
Log on and enjoy reading about yourselves! KATHLEEN
WHEELER needs new names to add to her calling list for book sale workers. If
you can help with the monthly book sales on the Thursday evening ( RENEWALS
– Friends of the Williston Public Library is proud to say that our membership
stays above 100 members, and there is very little attrition. The loyalty of the
members keeps us a viable organization, and the renewals are still a major
source of income as many members increase the amount of giving as the years go
by. There
are no salaries connected with “Friends”; we do not advertise, and all monies
raised are used to enhance the library inventory and present events and
programs. If you hear of a program or speaker that might be a good one for
“Friends” to sponsor, please call Peter Zettler, 529-9950 or Mary Mcdaniell,
528-5972. HISTORY
GROUP is composed of some of the hardest working “Friends” we have and they are
heading toward deadline for publishing the Williston Family History Book. If
you who are reading this newsletter have not given the data and any pictures of
your family for the book time is fast running out. The forms are at the library
and will be on the website. Get your family information into the History Group
NOW or you will be disappointed when the book comes out and you are not part of
it. Call Michelle at the library, 528-2313, for further information. ALSO,
the same History Group has videos and CDs for sale on the history of Williston,
Containing 45 photographs and narratives they have been “Hot sellers”. Kathryn
Harris conducts interviews with Jeanette Barton,Beulah Robinson,Robert H.
Stevens, Cornelius Williams, Hank Radacky, Flavius and Gloria Jerrel and Elihu
Ross. Bill Whitehurst heads up this talented group which gives so much time to
capturing the history of Williston through spoken and photographic means. You
can order the videos ($12.00) or the CDs($15.00) by calling the library. The
History group meets the last Tuesday of each month at FIRST
SATURDAY BOOK SALES – We end this newsletter where we started. Donations
of clean, salable books are needed for us to have the very best sales. We have
the sale the first Saturday of each month September through May. If your
shelves are sagging and books are overtaking your house, cull them and give us
the extras to sell. All of the monies go to the library or “Friends” for
programs. Books can be taken to the library during regular library hours or
brought to the sale at the community center. We cannot use old almanacs, dated
newsmagazines, old textbooks and dirty, moldy books. We also sell tapes, both
audio and video. Cookbooks, poetry, good fiction, sci-fi, mysteries and
westerns are particular favorites – but any book is a potential moneymaker. THINGS
